The thylacine (Thylacinus cynocephalus), also known as the Tasmanian tiger, isn't a tiger at all, but a marsupial, like a kangaroo, only it was a carnivore. It belongs to a group of similar carnivorous marsupials called the thylacinids, which appeared in the fossil record during the Miocene. It went extinct sometime in the 19th century because of European settlers moving into Australia, New Zealand, and Tasmania. The thylacine lived in Tasmania.
